A police officer was left unscathed after a vehicle from Vice President Joe Biden's motorcade collided with his bike last week.
The incident occurred October 8th as Biden was leaving the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins hotel in San Francisco.
Officer Albie Esparza, spokesman for the SFPD, identified the driver of the van as a 25-year-old woman. "The van was coming out of the [hotel] garage onto California Street where the van’s front right side made contact with the police motorcycle on the left side, which a sergeant was on."
Although the driver was put at fault for the accident, she was not cited.
Amidst the recent controversies being overcome by the Secret Service, a spokesman says it was determined that this accident would not initiate any protocol changes for motorcades.
It certainly is not the first time that presidential or vice presidential motorcades have been involved in accidents. In many ways, it's simply a numbers game, that given the frequency with which they are on the streets, the number of vehicles in each motorcade and the diversity of drivers behind each wheel, it's only natural that accidents will occasionally occur.
It is very fortunate that the officer was uninjured, however our thoughts go out to the damaged motorcycle during this trying time.
