A rider was killed in Costa Mesa early on December 25th, authorities have stated.

Costa Mesa Police Sergeant Patrick Wessel says that the incident was reported shortly after 1:00 am at the intersection of Harbor Blvd and 19th street.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Jonathan Vantrease. He was pronounced dead on-scene at approximately 1:30.

Apparently, Vantrease proceeded into the intersection through a red light and struck an SUV. Vantrease was traveling southbound on Harbor Boulevard and the SUV westbound on 19th Street.

The driver of the SUV did not flee and was not cited.

This is a terrible tragedy which has the potential to afflict any of us riders. Though it is completely unadvised to enter any intersection on a red light, all riders know the feeling of sitting at a signal that refuses to change for us. Under these circumstances if possible, it's recommended to activate the pedestrian crossing signal in order to stop cross-traffic.

The Orange County motorcycle lawyers here at RiderzLaw offer our most sincere condolences to the family and friends affected by this tragedy. We beg you readers to please, look out for yourselves out on the roadways.
