I will be spending the majority of my weekends exploring new beaches this summer. I made this decision at the beginning of the month. It seemed to make sense given the beach was the only place I was finding relief from the heat.
So, the weekend before last I drove down to San Diego for the first time. It was during the scorcher weekend and I decided I needed a farther escape from the heat in Los Angeles. I also noticed the temperature would be in the eighties in San Diego that weekend, which sounded way more reasonable than a hundred plus degree weather.
Note: Always check the weather report before you head out on a far ride. It just saves so many headaches.
I left for this trip pretty early. It’s a bit of a drive to San Diego and I didn’t want to be fighting too much traffic for the majority of the trip. It paid off as I made pretty good time at around two hours. I took the I-5 South, then exited on La Jolla Village Drive, a right onto La Jolla Village Drive, left onto Torrey Pines Rd, turned right onto Prospect Place until it turns into Coast Blvd. It’s a very straight forward ride, no great views, or fun twisty turns. However, it was a nice ride because of the light traffic and the ease of it all.
When I arrived at La Jolla Cove it was cool to see a designated parking space for motorcycles. Another bonus was it was free to park there. I spent the day out at the coves and I have to recommend people arriving early on the weekends because this location fills up quick. At a certain point there were so many people in the water snorkeling and taking up beach space you could barely move three feet.
The location also comes with a park above the coves. It’s a pretty good size, and it’s dog friendly. I moved around the small town a bit and discovered lots of restaurants, shops, and even art studios. Normally, I only stay in nature, but it was a nice change to just ride out to a new town and explore a new area.
Even though this trip wasn’t bursting with scenic variety, or mountains, or curves, it’s still a solid adventure. I’d give this a 7/10 rating.
Stay safe in these streets!
