Ride season is in full swing ladies and gentlemen. If you’re anything like me you’re indulging as much as possible. Good weather is all it generally takes to get me outside for an adventure, and finding new places to explore is an added bonus. Over the weekend, I went out to Franklin Canyon and explored this little slice of heaven.
First things first, I’m going to praise this ride for packing a lot of punch despite the destination being near my home. It offers highway roads, twisty mountain roads, and views! The ultimate pay off in my opinion is the park itself – it’s gorgeous.
I left my house pretty early because, although I’m capable of dipping in an out of lanes, I prefer just avoiding traffic and arriving at my destination without much hassle. From mid-city I took US 101N towards Ventura Fwy, then I took exit 15 onto Coldwater Canyon Ave, after that I turned onto Franklin Canyon Dr and arrived at my destination.
The drive itself was perfectly fine, but be aware Franklin Canyon Drive does have some tight corners the higher up the mountain you go. It also has a bit of loose gravel as well, so you should definitely be mindful as you head up. I heard a few screeching tires from cars pushing the speed limit during some of the turns as I drove up. The view on the way up the mountain is well worth taking it easy with a slower speed.
Some of the Franklin Canyon’s best features are free parking, hiking, picnic areas, a lake, and scenic outlooks prime for photo taking. While I was there I noticed a few families having fun, a few couples, and a group of friends having a picnic party. There are also a lot of trees which offer much appreciated shade during this hot summer season. Everyone should also pack sunscreen just to be on the safe side.
As a whole, I give this ride a sincere recommendation for all riders. It’s fun, varied, and well worth the trip.
Stay safe in these streets!
