I know you’re like me. I know you close your eyes and shut down your mind and still sleep won‘t come. I know that a restless anticipation will leave you staring at the ceiling for several hours that you really should be spending in dreamland. I know that there, in the dark of your bedroom you smile every time you think about tomorrow’s ride.
Okay, maybe I’m being a little heavy-handed with the poetry. But if you’re anything like me then you’ll agree that Christmas morning may as well be every morning you find yourself making that short march to your bike, donning your helmet and hitting the road. The sight of the world rushing by, the smell of gasoline and rubber, the sound of the beast beneath me and the anticipation of the feelings all these sensations will produce are still enough to keep me awake as if every night were the night before Christmas.
For me, riding is a part of my everyday routine. With two wheels being my main mode of transportation to and from work, I sometimes forget how fantastic riding a motorcycle can be. And yet, I still experience an uncontrollable excitement each time I suit-up for the commute. I believe that riding can be and is cathartic for many people, even when it is part of a daily routine.
It’s the riding that makes a routine so much more than what’s usual. Fuel-injected or not, chain-driven or belt-driven, two cylinders or six, motorcycles make the ordinary extraord…well, you know. Now I’m just being cliche. It’s because we can all relate, however, that makes what I’m saying sound so much like what you've heard so many others say.
Could it be that motorcycles show us just how similar we all are? I believe so. In much the same manner, Christmas morning produces relatively the same feelings for nearly everyone.
If you haven’t already, next time you climb onto your bike before a day’s ride your going to think about how someone compared riding a motorcycle to Christmas morning, and well, you should because riding that machine is a gift you give yourself over and over again. Here’s to Christmas everyday!
