Lately I have been day dreaming about places I would like to ride to and visit. Maybe it isn’t so much lately, I often dream. There are so many places to go and so little time…
Packing my tent and a few days’ supplies on the back of the bike and setting out on a country road is bliss. I can cross the mountains to the Pacific any time and have camped there often. Rides across the SF Bay are always fun. It is hard to imagine the empty, almost wilderness, places so close to millions of people. A couple of years ago I rode Highway 49 north to south through the gold country camping along the 1,000 mile trip. That got me thinking about other trips to places where few actually visit.
Tom Culbertson wrote Sierra Nevada Secrets in the April edition of Rider Magazine. He rode from Bakersfield to Fresno taking the really scenic route. I have been on some of those roads myself but never on a motorcycle. What is stopping me?
Maybe it is time. I have to get away from the Bay area and then cross farm country so it takes four hours or so to get to some of the places I want to ride. That isn’t much of an excuse, is it?
Where should I go this year?
I could ride to Imperial County in the southeast corner of the state. It is the only county I have never been to. A trip there might go along the Colorado River. Maybe I could cross to Mexico and to San Felipe? I could return through the Anza Borrego Desert or maybe there is a route west through the mountains to San Diego.
There are a lot of places in the Mojave to explore. I learned recently of an old tourist spa off Zzyzx Road. There is a huge radio telescope out there somewhere. I could see where the river goes underground to flow near California City. There are a lot of old mining sites too.
I stayed at Carrizo Plains a couple of years ago. There are many rides I saw near the area. I could ride along the San Andreas Fault or visit abandoned ranches. That place is beautiful and nearly unknown here in California.
Anyone else have an idea to share? Maybe a group adventure is in order?
