What's the best motorcycle ride in California? In my opinion, that title goes easily to the Pacific Coast Highway. Beginning at the Mexico border and stretching all the way until Oregon, this romantic stretch of coastal road has been featured in film on many occasions with its breathtaking ocean views and impressive bridges along the way. You'll find the best riding conditions in the springtime with a vivid display of colors offering fantastic riding sights.
PCH tends to be very well maintained so you'll find smooth, easily navigable pavement all along this route. If you want something to do on your trip there are some great art galleries and shops available along the way. For this I definitely recommend a stop at the city of Carmel. The downtown area is very convenient and has a classic laid-back atmosphere.
Also on the route is the National Steinbeck Center located in Salinas near Monterey. This is the actual house where Steinbeck was born and is great for mid-ride stop.. The town has an interesting museum, of course featuring many of Steinbecks books. Another requirement for your journey is a ride through San Francisco. This amazing city has tons to do and see, you'll find there will never be a dull moment. Ask ten people what the recommend you do on the PCH ride, and you're likely to get ten different answers. Your options are nearly endless so do some research and find out what appeals most to you.
Certainly the PCH ride is a very long one, and although the views can sometimes demand your attention for this reason also you need to practice safe riding habits. Going slowly or stopping all together to take in your surroundings is highly recommended and can be a very immersive experience.
Whenever I have the opportunity, I hop on my bike and find a stretch of open road to relieve some of the stress and pressure of life, and to simply take in the feeling of my bike underneath me. California has many miles of scenic roads but the Pacific Coast Highway is a special experience and one not to be missed. If you ever have a chance to ride this exciting and beautiful highway, don't hesitate to do it – you will not regret it. While you're at it, take some of the side roads off PCH. You just might find some hidden gems .
