"Humble but infamous hangout…like a church for wayward souls Whose paths to Heaven are found with throttle in hand." These are the words Zapata Espinoza chose to describe The Rock Store, an infamous biker hangout located in the mountains of Southern California..
For the readers not living in California, you might not have heard of this magical place, and for those living here, you need to pay The Rock Store a visit and soon! They are located at 30354 Mulholland Highway in Cornell CA, nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains. It has long been a famous destination for bikers all around the world, and at most any time, you will find 50 plus bikers parked out front.
The location was originally a hot springs spa, but turned into a gas station in the 1940s and 1950s. Ed and Veronica Savco are the store founders, who traveled here after WWII and bought The Rock Store in 1961. Made entirely of volcanic rock, it fits right in with the countryside that surrounds it. The couple first developed it into a small town grocery store, but the area of Malibu and Cornell grew quickly. Soon, drivers and bikers from all over the world were travelling through and stopping in for a visit. Now, it has turned into what most can argue is the most popular biker hangout in California, if not in the world.
As you pull up, you feel right at home with your fellow biker brothers and sisters. All types come here, cruisers, street bikers, dual sports, cross country travelers, you name it. Often the parking spaces out front are turned into an unplanned motorcycle show, as hundreds show up at one time. Walk up and down the aisles of different bikes and breathe in the fresh Pacific Ocean air. Celebrities frequent the area, and Jay Leno is a regular here showing up on his many toys, including his superbike with a jet engine. Others seen here are Arnold Schwarzenegger, Eddie Van Halen, Harrison Ford, Hulk Hogan, Jesse James, and John Travolta. The Malibu twisty canyons nearby are a good reason to visit and test out your fear and bike limits. Be careful, as many drivers use this route to test their Lamborghinis and BMWs as well!
So if you're up for an unforgettable day trip, come by to check out the bikes, grab a BBQ sandwich and a beer. You will not regret it.
