Ahh, St. Paddy’s Day. Green beer, green beads, everyone out having fun and celebrating. What could be better? That is, until you’re riding your motorcycle and some drunken idiot runs a red-light in front of you, and your life flashes before your eyes.
Be on the look-out tonight for drunk drivers. My advice is to keep the bike at home this evening. And if you’re going out drinking, please take a cab!! Saving that twenty bucks by driving yourself to a bar could be the worst decision of your life.
Cops throughout the state and country will be stepping up enforcement, looking for people who are drinking and driving. Don’t drink and ride. You can’t afford it. In California, a first-time DUI conviction means thousands of dollars in fines, loss of one’s driver’s license, and often means jail time. And those thousands of dollars are before you calculate in the increased cost of car insurance, missed work, trying to get around without a license, and the cost of a competent attorney. The real cost to you could easily be over ten-thousand dollars. Yikes.
And that’s not the worse case scenario if you drink and ride. It’s no secret that drinking and riding results in thousands of injured riders every year — many of whom are fatally injured. As a motorcycle accident lawyer, I see these tragedies almost every day. What makes them that much worse is that these accidents are 100% avoidable. Be smart. Be safe. Have fun tonight, but don’t drink and ride.
