Retired police officer hit funeral procession

December 10, 2014

A retired police officer from the San Diego Police Department was injured during a funeral procession on Monday in the Mountain View area.

According to officials, the incident occurred at the intersection of Imperial Ave and South 45th St at about 1 pm. Witnesses say his role during the procession was to direct traffic.

Officer Humberto Hernandez stated that immediately after the crash the driver exited his sedan and ran south away from the scene. At the time of writing this report, he still had remained on the run.

Responding medical professionals transported the downed rider to the hospital. He is reported to have sustained non-life-threatening injuries to the arm, back and head.

In cases like these, the reality of a motorcyclists visibility on the road becomes frighteningly apparent. When a police officer working traffic direction detail, most likely with lights flashing and in the presence of other officers gets hit, we have to call into question what chance a lone rider on a discreet bike will have. The San Diego motorcycle accident lawyers here at RiderzLaw hope for a speedy recovery of the downed rider, and urge our readers to please stay safe out on the roadways.
